Morning stiffness often eases once you move
Your knee may resist those first few steps. Your shoulder may catch while you get dressed.
The joint may loosen as you move. It can ache again after chores.
That doesn't always mean a new injury. Long use can make a joint sore.
Notice when the soreness starts and stops. You'll explain the trouble more clearly at a visit.
Wear, strain, and old injuries can leave soreness
Arthritis can make a joint stiff and achy. One motion may hurt when a tendon is strained.
Tendons tie your muscles to bones. They pull as you reach, rise, or climb.
An old fall may still change your movement. Weak muscles also make the joint work harder.
Soreness at rest needs a doctor's check. Aching that keeps worsening needs one too.
You don't need to name the cause. Your exam and X-ray can help sort it out.
Gentle movement often helps more than full rest
Try an easy walk if you can. Don't continue if the joint feels unsteady.
Simple exercises may give the joint more support. Your doctor or physical therapist can show safe motions.
A brace may help with daily movement. A pain cream or gel goes on skin over the sore joint.
Ask your doctor whether that medicine is safe. Your other medicines and health problems matter.
Don't push through a sharp jab. Let the joint have an easier day.
Heat, fever, or new weakness needs quick care
Call for care if swelling keeps rising. A hot joint with fever can't wait.
New weakness or numbness also needs attention. Don't delay after a hard fall.
A regular visit starts with your account. The clinic staff will watch you move.
They'll press around the joint and check strength. You may also need an X-ray.
Before you go, write down what hurts. Bring your medicine list.
Take earlier joint X-rays and scans too. They can help show what changed.

A retrospective comparison of 523 bone marrow aspiration procedures against 435 open iliac crest bone graft harvests found aspiration significantly reduced complications - relevant because marrow aspiration for a joint injection is a real procedure with a real, if low, complication rate.

In 96 patients, concentrated bone marrow aspirate contained a mean of 26.3 million nucleated cells per mL but only about 1,422 colony-forming units of connective tissue progenitors, and the nucleated cell count had negligible predictive value for how many progenitor cells were actually present (r-squared 0.28).

Mesenchymal stromal cells make up only about 0.001 to 0.01 percent of the nucleated cells in bone marrow, so the harvesting and processing technique - aspiration site, syringe size, centrifuge speed and time - materially determines what ends up in the syringe, and no consensus protocol exists.

In a 480-patient, four-arm, multicenter randomized phase 2/3 trial, none of three orthobiologic cell injections - autologous bone marrow aspirate concentrate, autologous adipose stromal vascular fraction, or allogeneic umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells - was superior to any other, or to a corticosteroid injection control, on pain at 12 months.

FDA states in its consumer alert that the only FDA-approved stem cell products in the United States are blood-forming stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood, approved for disorders of the blood-forming system, and that NONE of these products - stem cells, stromal vascular fraction, umbilical cord blood, Wharton's jelly or amniotic fluid - has been approved for the treatment of any orthopedic condition, including osteoarthritis, tendonitis, disc disease, tennis elbow, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, neck pain or shoulder pain.
